Established more than four decades ago, the Arnold School has evolved to specialize
in topic areas across the spectrum of public health. In parallel with our tremendous
growth, the Arnold School has expanded to include six departments (below) and ten areas of study.

Communication Sciences and Disorders (COMD) focuses on normal and disordered communication
development, such as speech delays and literacy achievement, as well as acquired disabilities
(e.g., hearing loss, post-stroke communication problems) through both clinical practice
                                          and scientific research.

Environmental Health Sciences (ENHS) is primarily concerned with the interactions
of humans with the environment and focuses on the adverse effects of environmental
conditions or contamination on human health and the impacts of human activities on
                                             the environment.

                                          Epidemiology/Biostatistics (EPID/BIOS)

Epidemiology/Biostatistics (EPID/BIOS) is comprised of two disciplines: Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Epidemiologists are trained in the study of the distribution and determinants of
disease or disability in human populations. Biostatisticians apply statistical theory,
methods, and techniques to the planning, development, and evaluation of health programs
                                             and problems.

                                          Exercise Science (EXSC)

Exercise Science explores the relationship between exercise participation and human
health, and research focuses on understanding why regular physical activity prevents
disease and promotes health. Exercise Science also houses two accredited clinical
programs: Athletic Training (AT) and Physical Therapy (PT).

Health Promotion, Education, & Behavior (HPEB)
Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior (HPEB) is an interdisciplinary field of
study that can be described as the science and art of improving the public’s health
through application of the social and behavioral sciences.

Health Services Policy & Management (HSPM)
Health Services Policy and Management (HSPM) is an interdisciplinary field concerned
with the promotion of personal and public health through planning, organizing, directing,
controlling, coordinating and evaluating health services.
