Undergraduate Research at the Arnold School
At the Arnold School of Public Health, undergraduate students have the chance to be part of research that matters. Our students work with faculty mentors on projects that explore the health of people, families and communities, gaining experience that can shape their next steps after graduation.
How to get involved in research at USC
Research can look different for every student. Some students collect and analyze data for researchers and professors. Others help with community-based projects, support faculty-led studies, explore health policy, study physical activity and nutrition, or examine the environmental and social factors that affect health. No matter the topic, students learn how to ask thoughtful questions, work as part of a team and better understand how public health makes a difference in everyday life.
While getting started can feel intimidating, we try to help students find a path that fits their interests, goals and experience level. Students who are interested in research can complete the Arnold School undergraduate student research form to learn more about opportunities across the school and be matched with a mentor.
Research is part of who we are
Undergraduate research is a growing part of the Arnold School experience. In 2025, 25 Arnold School undergraduates graduated with Leadership Distinction in Research. More than 200 students are engaged in Arnold School research labs, and 126 Arnold School faculty are directing Honors College senior thesis projects during the 2025-26 academic year.
Those numbers reflect what students and families can expect here: a school where faculty mentorship is accessible, research opportunities are active and students are encouraged to take what they are learning in class and apply it to real questions about health.
Student support in research
Arnold School students are supported by faculty, staff and the broader University of South Carolina research community. Through USC’s Office of Undergraduate Research, students can learn how to get started, find mentors, register research projects, apply for funding and share their work.
Students can also explore USC’s Getting Started in Research resources, search the Faculty Research Database, and apply for funding opportunities such as the Magellan Scholar Grant, which helps support faculty-mentored undergraduate research projects.
How is it helpful to engage in research?
For students, undergraduate research can open doors leading to presentations, publications, graduate school preparation, stronger resumes and clearer career goals. At USC, students can also share their work at research events, conferences and student showcases, like Discover USC.
For parents, it is one more way to know that an Arnold School major goes beyond the classroom and helps students build skills, form meaningful connections and gain hands-on experience that prepares them for the future.
