If you want to know one thing about us, it is that we are committed!  The long-term success of our department is rooted in our deep, abiding commitment to advance the public’s health through research and by training and empowering the next generation of epidemiologists and biostatisticians.

There has never been a more exciting time to be working in epidemiology and biostatistics.  With an ever-expanding list of threats to human health, we are rising up to meet the emerging health threats of today while also training leaders prepared to tackle the unforeseen public health challenges of the future.

Our faculty expertise spans a broad spectrum of topics that enable us to confront the most pressing public health issues of our time.   In epidemiology this includes topics such as emerging infectious and tick-borne diseases, health and disease throughout the lifespan including early life (perinatal epidemiology) and aging including non-infectious diseases that tend to occur later in life such as cancer and cardiometabolic disease.  Cross-cutting topics include health inequities research, nutritional epidemiology, and causal inference methods.  Our current goal is to grow in environmental epidemiology.  Biostatistics as a discipline is rapidly evolving as AI revolutionizes the field, and our methodologic work includes machine learning, disease modelling, geospatial methods, and analyses of multi-omics data, among other topics.  As our disciplines continue to evolve, our faculty are proactively working to ensure that we are keeping our students on the leading edge in the art and science of public health.  This includes a central focus on critical thinking.

Dedicated to high-quality teaching and research for more than 50 years, this department has a proud tradition of excellence. Whether in research or public health practice, the achievements of our alumni stands as testament to our quality program in training epidemiologists and biostatisticians.  We honor our history, but we are deeply invested in forging an even brighter future. With 35 faculty and $11.1M in funding this past fiscal year, our department is bigger and more robust than ever and we continue to search for ways to improve.

We offer rigorous, high-level training in a collegial, supportive environment.  We are preparing tomorrow’s public health leaders today with our multi-faceted educational program; this includes a curriculum with rigorous methods complemented by practical applications, mentorship, practicum in teaching and consulting, and abundant opportunities to participate in top-tier research.
