Chemical Engineering

Our Academics

Chemical engineers design, discover, and create systems ranging in size from the molecular scale up to a chemical plant. They integrate chemical, physical, biological, mathematical, and computing elements to develop processes and produce products for the benefit of society. Chemical engineers are trained to understand systems holistically and to develop and evaluate solutions regardless of the problem’s context. The Department of Chemical Engineering offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees as well as an undergraduate minor in chemical engineering.

Undergraduate Programs:

Chemical Engineering, B.S.E.

Our 131 semester-hour undergraduate curriculum integrates the study of engineering, chemistry, physics, computer modeling, safety, and economics. Our Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering prepares you for a career in chemical process industries or pursuit of advanced degrees in chemical engineering or related fields. This allows you to help solve major societal challenge like energy system decarbonization, environmental sustainability, and materials development (including for batteries, hydrogen storage, and nuclear fusion).

Minor in Chemical Engineering

If you are majoring in engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, economics, or related fields, and you are interested in the chemical process industry or pursuing a graduate degree in the field, then the Chemical Engineering Minor may be right for you. This plan of study provides you with an introduction to Chemical Engineering fundamentals, as well as the chance to take elective courses in areas such as energy, materials, battery systems, electrochemical engineering, and mathematical modeling.

Graduate Programs:

Master of Engineering in Chemical Engineering

Our 30 semester-hour M.E. degree program offers intensive, focused training in the professional practice of chemical engineering. The program is specifically designed for students who plan to pursue industrial careers, who want to enhance their job applications with a graduate degree, who seek higher starting salaries, and who desire rapid promotion within many corporate structures.

Master of Science in Chemical Engineering

Our 30 semester-hour program includes a research thesis and serves traditional chemical engineers who wish to obtain advanced training in chemical process areas or science majors who wish to receive quantitative training to enhance their qualifications for industry or medical practice.

Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering

Our 60 semester-hour doctoral program prepares graduates of the program to meet the growing demands for advanced level research, development and entrepreneurial positions in the chemical process industry. You will focus on specialized research with a dissertation that leads to a Ph.D. Full-time Ph.D. students typically have their tuition paid by the department and receive a full stipend.
