The Carolina Leadership Review is an online journal of leadership studies initiated and operated by the Center for American Civic Leadership and Public Discourse. The Project will be public-facing and accessible rather than primarily academic in orientation. It will include short pieces (1200-1800 words) on leadership theory and practice; first-hand reflections by leaders from various disciplines, such as politics, business, and academia; and brief historical and cultural reflections on leadership and its relationship to a flourishing society.
If you are interested in learning more or submitting an essay for consideration, please contact the Editor-in-Chief of the Carolina Leadership Review, Nathan White (nw45@mailbox.sc.edu).
Civic Education Initiative: Pocket Constitutions
In 2026, the Center launched a civic education initiative centered on the launch of its pocket Constitutions. The Center will distribute 10,000 free copies of the pocket Constitution, which contains the text of the following:
- The Declaration of Independence
- The Constitution
- The Bill of Rights
- The other constitutional amendments
- Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address
- Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech
2,000 copies of the pocket Constitutions were first distributed on July 4, 2026, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, at a Minor League Baseball Columbia Fireflies game. The pocket Constitutions are also distributed at all Center events and across campus throughout the academic year. This effort will encourage students, faculty, and the community at large to engage in ongoing reflection of these formative documents by widely disseminating primary source material of important American founding and “re-founding” documents in a format that is easy to access and reference.
