Study Away

The Honors College actively encourages students to enrich their educational experience by studying away from campus. These exciting opportunities include academic year and summer semester programs offered by the Honors College and academic departments.

Honors Beyond the Classroom Through Study Away

Students may fulfill the BTC requirement through the successful completion of an approved study away course. “Study away” includes both domestic and international (or “study abroad”) opportunities. A student must receive course credit for the study away activity in order to fulfill the Honors BTC requirement.

Students may use up to 9 hours of approved non-Honors departmental BTC coursework to fulfill the BTC requirement and up to 2 Honors electives, including departmental study abroad courses. There is no limit for SCHC courses (ex. SCHC 300, SCHC 400, SCHC service learning courses, SCHC 497). For study abroad courses in which you may enroll in more than one class, you must complete at least 3 credit hours to fulfill Honors BTC or an Honors elective.

To fulfill the Honors BTC requirement, a study away course must:

  • be a USC credit-bearing course of at least 3 hours
  • be taught entirely away from campus, not including pre-departure meetings.

This means that courses featuring fall or spring break trips will not fulfill the Honors BTC requirement. If you have a question about a study away experience and whether or not it can count towards Honors BTC, please contact honorsaway@sc.edu.
