The primary intent of this of the ITSE Grant Program is to 1) develop innovative traffic safety enforcement programs that demonstrate effectiveness by reducing the number of motor vehicle crashes due to one or more of the subject risky driving behaviors; and 2) ensure the traffic safety enforcement programs are repeatable and scalable for use by law enforcement throughout the United States.


NHTSA seeks new, innovative countermeasures, or innovative enhancements to existing countermeasures that will demonstrate traffic safety improvement. Applicants must demonstrate a clear evidence-based, data-driven approach to improve traffic safety within the following focus areas:


1.Drug impaired driving;


2.Alcohol impaired driving;


3.Speeding;


4.Aggressive driving;


5.Occupant protection;


6.Distracted driving; and


7.Careless and negligent driving (especially around Work Zones, CommercialMotor Vehicles, School Zones, and congested areas)


 


NHTSA will only accept one (1) application per eligible applicant during each application phase. Applicants that were not selected during an earlier phase may submit a revised application during a subsequent phase, provided the application continues to meet all eligibility requirements.

Submission Process

Limited submissions MUST be coordinated with the Office of the Vice President for Research.
